Titanium - Representation
Titanium - Representation
When we studied Heaven, what were the four elements of representation that we considered?
Now that we have them written down, begin to fill out these four elements with different representations from Titanium.
Task 1 - Representational Analysis
The video denotes a clear, linear storyline as a young boy escapes police after venturing out of his school. Enigma codes obfuscate the cause of young boys' situation, and an open-ended conclusion continues to heighten mystery.
While there is a clear link between lyrics and visuals, the story itself is open to interpretation with no definitive ideological meaning.
- What events are shown?
- School
- Home
- Woodland
- What issues or topics are referred to?
- Bullying
- Abusive relationships
- School shootings
- Police brutality
- Which social groups are denoted?
- Teenagers
- Teachers
- Police
- Parents
- Which individuals are in the product?
- Lee's character

- First police officer
Place each of these representational elements written in pink into the corresponding row in the table below. Identify denotations that represent these different elements and note down their connotations as well.
Task 2 - Audience Positioning
Now we need to consider how an audience is encouraged to respond to various representations within Titanium.
- What is the preferred reading of Titanium? How are Sia's lyrics and David Wilson's visuals encouraging us to respond?
- What might a negotiated or oppositional reading of this music video look like? Consider the negative representations of certain social groups.
- Are there signs of realism? To what effect?
- Todorov's Narratology - consider equilibrium, disruption, return to new equilibrium
- Neale's Genre Theory - consider repetition of genre codes and the effect of intertextuality
- Hall's Representation - consider the extent to which this entire narrative is open to interpretation. Is there a dominant reading?
